SKY BLUES ‘SCATES’ THROUGH TO THE NEXT ROUND.Ballymena secured a passage into the next round of the Irish with a 1-0 victory over Belfast side H & W Welders. Fromer Rover Gareth Scates scored his 3rd of the season, with a delightful strike that was worthy to win any game. The sky blues had ridden their luck on a few occasions, but Scates scored the only goal on 57 minutes. A bouncing ball on the edge of the Welder’s area wasn’t cleared and Scates met the ball on the run and his spectacular drive crashed off the post and nestled into the net.

SCATES BACK ON TARGET!Garth Scates has returned to his impressive form, after being dropped for the Cup game against Linfield only a few weeks ago. After a solid display in the scoreless draw against Limavady last week, he inspired his team to take all three points away to Armagh City yesterday. Scates nearly got the ball rolling with only a matter of minutes gone, but drilled his low shot wide. Ten minutes later the Sky Blues opened their account through Stuart King, whose low angled shot cannoned off an upright and into the net. Scates again came close when he headed a cross from King, just over the bar on 27 minutes. Ballymena doubled their lead a minute later when King turned provider to set-up Albert Watson to score from close range. Not to be out done, former Blackburn Rovers player Scates, volleyed home at the back post when King again was the architect on the 71st minute. The result now sees the Sky Blues continue their progress to finish in the top half of the league.

SCATES MOVES TO GLENAVONFormer Blackburn Rovers player Gath Scates moved to Glenavon from Ballymena United for an undisclosed fee last month. ( Garth Scates being welcomed by Glentoran manager Stephen McBride) Scates had been with the Sky Blues for five seasons and felt he needed a change to move on as he only had a year remaining on his current contract at the Showgrounds. Speaking about the situation Scates stated, “ I’d been at Ballymena for five years and the people at the Club were fine to me and said they wouldn’t stand in my way. I’ve known Stephen (McBride) from my time at Blackburn when he used to come over to study the coaching so as soon as he knew I was available he contacted me straight away. I was glad once I knew Glenavon was interested and even though there were another couple of clubs in contact, once Glenavon came in that was it, I wanted to come here.”The formalities were due to have been completed the week before Garth eventually signed, but his wife was taken into hospital for the birth of the couple’s first child, Gabriella. Scates made his debut in a 2-0 defeat to Crusaders, but has since been playing a strong role in midfield. Unfortunately, two weeks ago, Scates' return to the Showgrounds lasted less than five minutes as he was forced off after picking up a thigh strain and was replaced by Eamon Murray. Scates is still out injured and will miss out on the home game against Cliftonville today. Again all at NIBRSA want to wish Garth all the best with his move to Glenavon.
